Katie Tastrom (she/her) is a writer, speaker, and consultant focusing on disability, policy, sexuality, and benefits.

Katie received her Master of Social Work from the University of Texas in 2008 and her JD from Syracuse University School of Law in 2014. She has worked in various social work and legal roles.

However, most of her expertise comes from over two decades of activism and organizing and lived experience. This background and continued research and education informs her work.

She has written prolifically about disability and other topics (you can read more here), and her first book, A People's Guide to Abolition and Disability Justice, will be released May 7, 2024 by PM Press (More here.) While most of her writing focuses on policy, she has also published creative nonfiction. She is a versatile writer who has experience writing legal briefs, marketing, and ghostwriting.

She has spoken to professional, academic, and nonacademic audiences about many subjects including prison abolition, working with disabled clients, and others, (which you can read more about here.) Katie has also created and led workshops and trainings in different topics, and enjoys breaking down complicated policies into ways that are easy to understand. She's also worked as a disability consultant and a sensitivity reader.

Katie is a dedicated and passionate advocate with unique experiences and a great deal of knowledge about issues and policy, especially those affecting disabled people and sex workers.

Katie is based in Syracuse, New York, and travels frequently, especially around the Northeast. She spends her time watching Reality TV, making art out of garbage, and trying to teach herself to enjoy nature.
